quick question for some one that knows

i pre orderd half life 2 since i got the the game on its release date (not before and not via steam) from EB games and had it sent to me (should get tomorrow) will i have to activate the game via steam. if so will i be able to do this through port 80 on a australian skool proxy server (i go to boarding skool)
