Painkiller 1.00 wont run, get message

I just bought Painkiller and when I ran it the first time a message said something about only supporting 20 million colours I think, now when I run it it the screen goes black then goes back to the desktop, what do I do?

I dont want to bother with the patches unless it will definatly fix the problem because Im on dial up and the patch is over 90mbs.

Is there a quick fix? please help

have you tried updating your drivers and directX??
