i have had this problem with bit torrent and torrent programs ever since i got this computer. I have never got a download rate of over 15 bB/s using bit torrent.

right now i have bit tornado installed. i always get a yellow light, never a green one. i think the problem is with our LinkSYS befsr41 version 2 router. I have tried opening and forwarding ports i dont think i did it right because my normal download speed is around 2-5 kB/s. i tryed to open these ports: 6881-6889 as found on PortForward.com I also found this site as well: http://www.portforward.com/linksys/befsr41v2.htm

I have attached some pictures of the ports and thing i have tried to fix:

i have a cable modem which normally downloads things very fast

anyone have any ideas?

I tryed that about 2 weeks ago and i had a problem. i just installed it again today and I have the same problem.
the problem is when it trys to test the TCP listen port 6881 (in the first setup wizard I get this message:
Testing port 6881 ... Unable to test

any ideas for either AZUREUS or Bit-Tornado?

check your firewall and router settings (if your behind a router than you should set it up out side it)

6881 is a wide spread blacklisted port on most trackers now, try using something far greater than that such as 49154 and open it in your router as an incoming port, for the yellow sign, thats just a NAT error and nothing major to worry about.

I finished the download with Bit tornado-- after 20 hours of downloading! it was a 550 MB file and the average download speed was 30 kB/s. I left bit tornado open so people can download off on me. it say the upload speed is 60 kB/s. so i am downloading at around 5 kB/s and people are uploading off me at 60 kB/s after my download finished, is this normal?

also: andy I tryed port 49154 on Azureus and it now says this:
Testing port 49154 ... NAT Error

should i click next in the wizard and try to make it work?

First have you enabled incoming port 49154 in your router, if you have then make sure its open for everyone to come though on and go through the wizard again to test it as you suggested, , this will be likely one of the the causes of your slow download speed, secondly, what torrent sites do you use as i can suggest the best ones to you, try to keep a good share ratio ranking on the sites aswell as this can also improve your download speed.

I use azureus myself but config should be similar to what ever you use.

i had tried the port 49154 on Azureus before I opened my router, which was probably the problem. right now I am downloading something using Azureus and my download speed is about 18 kB/s and upload is about 14 K/bs

my download speed is now between 10-20 kB/s at least for this file

i dont think this is against the rules but I have used TorrentSpy.com and isohunt.com for my bit torrent files. any other sites that are good?

thanks andy

As was said before, some ISPs have started to bottle neck the default port range of some of the torrent clients such as 6881 - 6999. Change the ports. Also, the upload speed affects the download speed, so the lower you set the upload speed, the higher your download rate can get. As for torrent sites, the main torrent site these days is ++++++++.org (yes, no "e") There are other sites if you want to get more specific, such as http://www.animesuki.com/ for anime episodes/series.
Hm, well, it seems that that site has been blacklisted. I guess that makes, some illegal downloads do pop up. Oh well, animesuki is fully legal.

install UPnP
that will sort out ur port forwarding on you router.
Control Panel > add/remove programs > add/remove windows componts > click details on networking

Upnp is a major security hole in routers so they say and should never ever be used unless absoloutly nessecary.

I am trying to use the port 49154 on Azureus. I can download things but they are still slow. I know someone else who has the same ISP as my and he says he can download torrent files normally.

i looked under options>transfer. it says
40 KB/s global max upload speed [0: unlimited]
0 KB/s global max download speed [0: unlimited]

as of right now it says:
5 seeds
6 peers
1.5 KB/s (download speed)
3.2 KB/s (upload speed)
ETA 5 days
unlimited (max upload speed)

:( last night i was downloading at 10- KB/s on the same torrent

i would like to thank everyone who has posted on this thread for all their help!

5 seeds wont give you a great dl speed then most of the time, try downloading something brand new thats just been released such as eminem encore or a big movie thats just come out and if its a decent site it should have about 150 seeders supporting it and that should give you a great dl ratio.

Try it and see what happens.

I am trying to download something that is popular.

seeds 2 (1008) what does the 1008 mean?
peers 7 (4066) what does the 4066 mean?

my download is at 0 B/s ... also it is in a orange color as opposed to the other black numbers. what does the orange mean?

That numbers in the brackets mean the total nuber the tracker has ever tracked. It's called in swam, your probem also could be what tracker you connect to.

I think I will never get really fast downloads for everything. Sometimes my download is going really slow then it jumps up to 40 kB/s. My problem is pretty much solved, I have one last question:

Does people uploading off you slow down your download rate?

then when i am downloading something, you i set the upload rate at 15 KB/s or what should i set the max upload to when i am downloading something. ?

That depends on your download/upload speeds.
eg if u have a 2mbs dl speed, and a 256kbs upload speed, then you should have the upload at max to get the best dl speed.. that is ofcourse if you dont have any data limits : :blacblush | :redcool: :eyes:

wohoo

its kinda of a long story but i think our router is just plain dead. i think i have to get a new one.

so because our router is dead, the internet is only on 1 computer.... this one. I was downloading something last night with the router and everything and the highest download speed i got was about 15 kb/s

now there is no router.. all lights are green and I am getting download speeds between:

400-500 kB/s

YAY

this is for the same file! i guess the router slowed my download speed from 450 to 15 kb/s

so now i need a new router... can anyone suggest one that doesnt mess up the download speed off bit torrent? and hopefully one that works with xbox live.

right now i have the LinkSYS BEFSR41 version 2 Etherfast Cable/DSL router.

also can router just die like i think mine did?

thanks!

the longer u leave BT on the faster it gets. so they say.
it also depends on the amount of seeds and downloads will also make the speed diff. try sorting out the ports on ur router. www.portforward.com

no man, i think you didnt understand my last post. does anyone know a router that does mess with your bit torrent download speeds? the reason i have slow downloads isnt because of software.... its because i have a router with a hardware firewall

no routers mess with bit torrents and its not because you have a router with a hardware firewall.

If it does happen to be something with your router, it will be a fault or its not configured correctly to begin with.

Well here is what i know.... when i had a router.. i had really slow downloads now that i dont have a router.. i have really fast downloads!

so what does that mean?

ur router isnt configured rite....thats all... i had the exact same problem so i forwarded my ports... and it worked.. and then suddenly.. it stopped working.. i got nothing but a yellow light (bit tornado) and my dl speed never went higher than 50 kbps...

you know... i might be real late about this but... i have a linksys router too and its been giving me the exact same problem... but if ur router is dead i dont think it shud be that way to begin with... just go to DMZ under router config and open all ports for ur computer... i never really had to bother with any more port forwarding afterwards for my other p2p clients.

What I noticed in your pic is that it said your IP is xx.xx.xx.1 Did you follow the generic procedure you found exactly? Because through experience if you have DHCP on, it will hardly ever assign you to xx.xx.xx.1 Not knowing how adept you are at computers here is the default way you check your IP address. Start > run > "cmd" When you're in command line type ipconfig (for more detailed analysis type "ipconfig /all"). It'll tell you what your IP address is. Trying using that one when port forwarding.

As for your router question, the built in firewall is pretty much standard. I don't think it's often that you'll find one without it. However, it is more likely your router not being configured properly. I've had the same problem, I had to resort to using DMZ zone before I realized how to do it properly. The thing is with DMZ zone, you're not protected at all. I was a lot vulnerable to attacks and viruses and I did get a lot of viruses after going on DMZ zone. I even had to change to DMZ zone when I was downloading and turn it off when I wasn't. Very inconvenient.
