my standalone dvd player won't read subs

Hi ! I have an avi file (passion of the christ) with 2 subtitle files one is a *.sub the other is a *.txt. When I burn the avi with whichever one, my IIsonic2316 player "sees" the subtitles file but don't "read" them.
If I use the subtitle button on the remote control i just get the "hand" sign on the tv.
Both subtitles are ok as bsplayer "reads" them.
What should I do ?
