If any of you have ever been attacked by a hacker, you probably didn't enjoy it. Firewalls are the best way to protect your computer from hackers. The firewall that comes with Internet Explorer is not good enough if you spend a lot of time browsing. If you have ISDN or ADSL, chances are, your modem already has a very good built-in firewall. However, it never hurts to be more cautious.
Probably the best thing to do is get an old computer (P2, 32 MB RAM, with a network card, etc.) and install Linux on it. Then install Smoothwall 2 (www.smoothwall.com (http://www.smoothwall.com/)) on it and set it up so that your computer connects to the Internet through it.
Another thing you can do is download a Windows firewall such as Sygate Personal Firewall Pro (www.sygate.com (http://www.sygate.com/)).
The above two are very good (probably the best).
