I recently got interested in modding my x-box.
I read that taking the jewel and replacing it with another is very easy. But what about changing the operating system? I want to be able to do more with my x-box.
I also read that you can mod your xbox with out taking the cover off. Do you reccomened it?
What do you recommend i send it if i were to use a modchip? Will companies do it for me?
Thanks alot guys,
Flaky

if you want an easy modchip, get an X-Bit. there's no soldering required and you can easily do it yourself.
As for softmodding, I'm not sure but I think you need Action Replay and 007: Agent Under Fire and some other free utilities. Sounds cool, but I've never tried it before.

Softmodding is great. Large hard drives, bios loader for easy bios changing, all kinds of neat stuff.

hell ya mod it. Don't worry about doing the modding stuff. Pretty much just read up on your stuff. Make sure you know what your doing its pretty ez to mess up your xbox. Your question to changing your OP system can be harder. Many people just hook it up from there computer and use it there. It's probably the best way to go at it. Search around google there's a lot of sites out their that will help.

soft modded my xbox - installed linux using a gamesave off the net and Mechassault. worked great, comes with media players and editors - great for typing up essays, etc - save to usb drive.

I got a Q...when you softmod your xbox, lets say with 007 and AR, after you do it, does it act just like a chipped xbox?

if you softmod it - like the way I did - it's just for Linux. it won't play copied games, or copy games - it's just like an ordinary linux pc. it will play movies (almost all file types, upgradeable too), you can install programs, and almost anything that an ordinary linux pc of its specification can do. it's really easy and effective and is a great way to have a complete media player in your living room - save maybe for the Media Player that comes with a modded xbox. hope that helps.

No, softmodding can run Evolution X, play backups, emulators, etc. It can do everything a chipped box cab do. You simply used an exploit to install linux. I used an exploit to install the UDE and run evox & pbl.
Go to the "usual places", and get ltools 1.7.5, from \xbox\OS\linux\distributions. It uses linux as an engine to auto-install Evox & a bios loader, wrapped in a MXM GUI. I've even got a 40 gig drive in to play backups installed with dvd2xbox. XBMP is nice, too.
And the best, is it's immune to a clockloop, and has an easy uninstaller. After installation, it boots to evox like a chip. Play games, backups, whatever you want.

OK - I kinda siad above that I only used the softmod for linux.
I know what you mean though - it seems kinda complicated - lot's of different things you have to do through ftp etc. I not really techie, so the Linux exploit was great because it was so simple.

No, with ltools, there's NO FTP needed. EVERYTHING is included in the save file. I think it clocks in somewhere at 460 blocks. Easily fits on a ms mem card.
