OK I'm new to this dvd burning stuff and just want to know a few things. I'm considering purchasing a LiteOn DVD+-R/RW Dual Layer 8x IDE for &48 from Dabs.co.uk and am wondering how long approximately how long does it take to burn a film onto a DVD, something like a 700mb .avi file perhaps.

Because it is a +- drive does that mean i specifically need +- discs or does it mean I can use both. I seen a NEC dvd writer that said +/- which I'm assuming is both.

Cheers

Alll new writers tend to burn both format DVD blanks. These come in 2 flavours, that is dvdr+ and dvdr- (the new dual layer format discs are slightly different and can burn lots more data onto a single disk. These disks are very expensive at the moment though, and burners tend to burn them pretty slow).
An 8x dvd burner will burn a movie in approx 8 minutes, however if you want to burn an avi file then you will have to convert it first, this is very time comsuming and you need other software to do it. Try visiting www.doom9.org as it has tons and tons of info on burning dvds, avi's etc.

P.S. lay off the tonic as it will give you gut rot :D

If you have mpeg files or something like that and you don't want to convert stuff. Use SonicDVD it is so easy to put video files on a DVD with a menu. Use DVD+R they will work on 99.99% of DVD players.
