Why doesn't Doom 3 detect default cfg in the startup window - it's there!

I installed it in the normal directory (I already did a search and someone had suggested that it was in a file other than the default directory but mine is in the default location (C:\Program Files\Doom 3\Data\base). Then, to make things worse, I get a system error message right afterward.
My specs: P4 3.06GHz, 768MB RDRAM, 120GB 7200RPM, ATI 9800 Pro 128MB DDR.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...!

uninstall the game. and then delete the doom 3 folder. and start all over again.
