Hello,
A friend and I were trying to play a game of AoM:TT tonight, using a Direct IP connection. First, he tried to host a game. I entered his IP and waited, but it timed out. Next, I hosted, and he had the same problem. I'm not exactly sure how to troubleshoot this problem, so I'd like some help. I'll try and provide as much information as possible now.
I am running a P4 2.66 ghz with Windows XP. I connect to the internet via a network hub, which connects to my ADSL modem. I am runninng version 1.0 of the game.
My friend has a similar computer, but connects through a router and has cable internet. He also has version 1.0.
Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Ok here is first possible problem.. Router usually means Firewall. Check the ports the game requires to be open and if he's able to open those on the routers firewall. 2 you can have him put his IP on the DMZ setting on the router, I don't recommend this as just as he can see out with no problems people can see in the same way. I would go to AOM webpage and look at the FAQ and trouble shooting guides for more information

Ok, we opened the ports required, and we are still having problems, though we can see some progress.
When I try and connect to him, it will establish some sort of connection immediately, but then a 120 second timer starts counting down as it tries to connect further (?). I believe his router/firewall is causing the problems, but we are not sure how to fix them. Is it possible to disable a firewall on a router?

Actually I don't think its possible to completely disable router firewall. As for the connection timer you are possibly running into a second port switch in the software maybe. I would look in the router manual for DMZ host IP and put your friends in it for now. Also Windows XP has a builtin Firewall which more or less just annoys people. If you open properties on the LAN/WAN connection you connect to internet with the advanced tab has the firewall check box. I would JUST TO TEST disable the firewall then make sure the DMZ IP is setup on his end make sure you put in the right IP addy for him in the DMZ. DMZ = Demilitarized Zone. its effectively a total bypass of the routers security/firewall. Again I stress don't leave it this way if you don't have to as WinXP is still vulnerable to attacks and the wonderful New Spam attack of NET Send backdoor through MSN/ MS messenger. after you have that configured check to make sure on AOM website for the specific error you are having.

Ok, I will try this in a few days, when we're both around.
I am sure that the XP firewall is disabled on both computers, as it isn't very good in the first place.
I don't quite understand how to do the DMZ setup, as I don't and have never had a router myself. Will he have to add my ip to some sort of list, or will he have to add his own?
Just for the record, I played a LAN game with my brother the other day, and we had no problems at all.

Read the manual for the Router you have it will explain how and what DMZ is better as well as tell you how to configure it. Also it may have a filtering/applications setting in it which allows ports to be opened manually or via the detection of an application starting.

hey i have the same problem, i still havnt fixed it but i just worked my way around it.
what i do is i go to the online part and sign in and once im signed in i quit the online part not the game and then go to the direct ip and and now i can join and host. I no it worked by looking up at the top corner and seeing:
IP address: 10.0.0.2 (or similar)
Alternater IP: (UR CURRENT IP)
i have a router with a firewall so i think maybe ur friend with the router will have to do this.
hope this helps
