Welcome Canada

Welcome, fellow Canadians. It's about that time, to unveil your very own Xbox website! You begged for it, now you've got it. No other country in the world has been as vocal as Canadians in asking for (...more like
demanding) a unique site. Well, rejoice. Your prayers have been answered! It's the ultimate source for all your Xbox info.

This action packed site has ALL you need, with a special focus on Canadian news and information, important Xbox happenings throughout the country,
tailored information about the world of online gaming and Xbox Live (we do boast the 2nd highest broadband penetration rates in the world), and super-cool content on why gaming is Better on Xbox.

Canadians totally get the Xbox experience and the consoles have been flying off the shelves of Canadian retailers. You want proof? Well, Xbox has a higher share of the console market in Canada than any other country in the world. And we think that's pretty cool. What's more, we won't slack, we won't simply be inserting Canadian ship dates and Canadian retail prices... we are going to be delivering the information that matters to you.

We're going to be working hard to build this site to suit your needs and there's really only one way for us to know what it will take to make you happy: we need to hear from you. What do you want to see on the site? What upcoming Xbox titles excite you? How excited are you to compete against your fellow Xbox owners online?

Let us know what's on your Xbox brains by sending an email to xboxcafb@microsoft.com and telling us exactly what you want to see. We're going to be busy as beavers over the next few weeks re-tailoring the site to suit your needs, so make sure that you have a voice in the direction that we're moving towards.

look at this on the site...good read about canadas broadbadn connection...were 2nd in broadband

Canada goes online with Xbox Live

It's crazy just how well-connected we are in Canada! When you talk about broadband and online access, Canada practically leads the world. Latest stats show that we have the second largest number of broadband subscribers on the planet, with well over 80% of Xbox owners plugged in and ready to play.

When the service launches, Canadians will reap the benefits, with super quick online access and a host of great multiplayer games that are designed to perform online. So what's all the hype about, and why should we sit up and take notice? Read on to find out why it's so much better up here!

Couch Full of Friends Always Ready to Get Their Game On

Xbox Live is an online gaming service that lets you play multiplayer Xbox games on the Internet via broadband. (something like cable or DSL – dial-up isn't fast enough.) That's gaming service. Gaming. Got that? We're not here to get you shopping auction sites, checking news headlines, or emailing your dear old granny. What you can do is play great games with people everywhere. It's like having a couch full of friends ready to get their game on. You can chat with them while you play, no matter where they live. You can download new levels and items to keep everything fresh. It's all about the games.

How do I get it?

You gotta have high speed, or broadband, Internet service. That's number one. If you don't have it, get it. (You don't want to be the last one on the block with dial-up – that's just embarrassing.) You're also going to have to connect your cable or DSL modem to your Xbox. So you'll need an Ethernet cable for sure, and maybe some other hardware depending on how fancy you want to get with your home networking. Finally, you'll need a subscription (the introductory package is a steal—stay tuned for more information on how and where to purchase the kit ) to Xbox Live, and an Xbox game that is online-enabled.

How long do I have to wait for it?

The service will officially launch November 15th in Canada, but there is a chance that you can get in on the Beta program. You can try out the service and games in their pre-release form, plus tell all your friends that you were one of the first people in the world to play on Xbox Live! (It's sort of like being a Secret Agent, or Movie Star. Except you don't have to shave your head, get shot at or act)

The Canadian Gamer - A Profile (Exclusive!)

'Winterland's Who's Who'

by Kris Abel (GG8.com)

Harsh weather conditions each seasonal year have shaped the Canadian Gamer into a proficient player, someone that uses their times of forced shelter to educate and hone their mind. A habit passed on through generations, they are quick to learn and master new game concepts and new game systems such as Microsoft's Xbox.

More so than their counterparts around the world, the Canadian Gamer is a dual player, someone who owns both a PC and a console system, and enjoys a wide range of game titles, with driving games such as Rallisport Challenge and fighting games such as Dead or Alive 3 being favourites. When it comes to trying new experiences, Canadian Gamers will characteristically meet the challenge with "Why not, eh?"

The Canadian Gamer has a cultivated interest in the world outside, something that is reflected in their wide embrace of the Internet and the large numbers of Canadians with broadband connections. This, along with their insatiable passion for new game experiences has led them to be among the most connected gamers internationally, with relationships that allow them to keep abreast of video game trends in far away markets such as Japan, England, France, and South Korea.

For example, Canadian gamers prefer to play while sitting on a Chesterfield, what British Gamers refer to as a "sofa" and American Gamers call a "couch". Over the years, the Canadian Gamer's ability to follow international trends and adapt to their opponents has allowed them to master the use of all three terms and so they know their way around a living room no matter which country they are visiting.

Proportionately, Canada has the highest number of Xbox Gamers in the world, and it's popularity in the Hinterland can partly be found in its ability to create custom game soundtracks, making it the only video game system featuring music by The Tragically Hip, Bif Naked, Swollen Members, and strangely enough, Anne Murray.

Another strong draw for Canadian Gamers is the Xbox's strong sense of co-operative play, from Halo: Combat Evolved and Hunter: The Reckoning to the upcoming Brute Force and House of the Dead III. It's part of their national character to fight with, rather than against other players, despite their reputation for being among the hardest players to beat in international competitions.

This, however, can often develop into a "Canadian Stand-off", which occurs when two players insist that the other take the privilege of going primary through a door or being the one to drive a Warthog jeep, or the first to choose a popular fighting character. Even within a video game, the instinct towards courtesy is a strong one, and so when such conflicts occur too often, Canadian Gamers will make the switch over to EA Sports' NHL 2003, where such disputes are easily avoided thanks to the clear rules of hockey.

For a more complete story on the Canadian Gamer, why not contact the Canadian Gamelife Service, Ottawa.
