my windows media player is not working, it can play .wmv .mpg . avi and so on but it cannot play the sound in the files, it tries to connect to the "codec server" to dl the codec but it fails to dl them.
i know it is nothing wrong with the files and i have downloaded and reinstalled wmplayer 9 series from microsoft's web site.
what is wrong and what can i do to fix it?

Download other codecs not associated with M$
www.dvdrhelp.com has a nice section of codecs you can download and install, look under tools on the left menu.
Do not use Nimmo's codecs, personally they cause problems if you convert movies such as DVD-5's etc

Are you sure that WMP isn't on mute ?
Are you sure the movies you are trying to play doesn't require any extra codecs ?
Go to Microsoft WMP site and download the codecs pack.

yes i am sure that it is not on mute...
it says"connecting to server codec" then "failed to connect" even though i have internett connection.
it cannot play regular wmv files, but it can play mpeg files. i can play the wmv files in winamp....

You need codecs, but not just any codecs. You need to get a Video codec detection software. I use Gspot don't have link handy but look for Gspot Codec information appliance it will show you which drivers are needed for a specific media file and if you have the proper one and which alternatives can be substituted for it..
