As far as law goes, nothing. But there are certain consequences such as loss of quality which originals do not have. Messed up or scratched disc. Just put it this way, If you're a collector of dvds, you've got the wrong one(pirated that is).

So if I go into China Town in NYC and buy Spider-Man 2 or something on DVD. And there is a cop behind me, nothing happens? but the guy selling them is arrested right?

it can happen, i forgot the country, in which to stop the circulation of pirated dvds, authorities are "warning" buyers. they'd have to pay certain amount of money if they get caught.

Same where i am here in england, they just leg it and most of the time get away as some sellers have lookouts to buzz em that cops are nearby.

There is one more question though, its illegal to sell em but not to buy them, what about actually being in possession of them???

cops can't do a thing about that . they have to see u handing over a dvd and taking cash for it before they can do a thing ;) .

cops can't do a thing about that . they have to see u handing over a dvd and taking cash for it before they can do a thing ;) . here in the UK we have a part of the law which includes "Intent"
which basically states that if you have 20 copies of spiderman 2 in a bag then you are "intent on supplying" thus it would gain a conviction in a court of law. I am pretty sure that the same laws in some shape or form apply for most european countries as well as america.

having pirated dvds is a grey area, technically illegal but hard to enforce. most companies dont even want back up copies done as in there eyes the quality of product means it unnecessary for backup. since technically the disk is just the medium to convey the product to u the public & u are paying for licence to watch or use their product. if u dont make a back up & original gets f**ked does that mean as u have licence to use product & your medium is knackered can u just contact them for another copy, i wouldnt think so but i'd love to see someone try it in court lol

You bring a valid point. But please mind the language.

it's called recieving stolen goods, a friend of mine got in trouble for buying pirated dvd's in downtown boston; however it's often not enforced for the person buying the bootlegs, the person selling/creating them is usually fined and thats about it.

or they can forbid making back ups, but they'd have to replace the originals once they get broken...
