Problems using PS2 controller with ZSNES Help!!

I bought a usb adaptor which allows you to use a ps2 joypad for playing pc games. But i am having trouble configuring the buttons in zsnes.
My zsnes is a windows version and is V1.36.
I was only able to configure the directions, and after that it would not let me do anymore. The adaptor is definitely working as i troubleshot it in windows and its seeing all buttons working when they are pressed.
Has anyone configured this successfully in zsnes??

I have also discovered that my version of zsnes has only 4 joypad axes, which is why it only allowed me to input the 4 directionals and wouldnt allow me to add the buttons. Does anyone know how to increase the number of joypad axes on zsnes from 4?
i would really need 8 or 10.
