I have been asked if there is a way of joining a hard drive which has been partitioned?
And if so how?
And could it wreck the machine?
I don't want to remove any of the data
Can any one help me out with this?

Do you have data on the hdd ??
You could try with Partition Magic or F-Disk.

You can use "merge partitions" with partition magic. It expands your first partition and will create a folder on the big partition containing everything you had on the second partition.
This has worked many times before - HOWEVER: it is very recommended that you back up your edited before playing with partition tables. So if you have another drive to spare - take the time and do a back up before resizing.
good luck

partition magic will do that. merge 2 partitions. i have done it a few times and had no problems (lose of data)
but i would still backup ur stuff.

i also use partition magic. it's pretty reliable, ive never had trouble with it. but partition magic is not a freeware.
i dunno if there's any freeware that can do stuffs like that.
