i'm back to using win98 now, as my uncle suggested to use it instead of xp or me, says 98 is less prone to bugs and viruses.
what do you think?

O GOD NO!!!!
win 98/98se/me
worst O/S ever made
xp is much better, just keep up to date it and run a good virus scaner and firewall
most attacks are from a hotfix not installed yet
if you don't like using win update then try this

Has your uncle been drinking?
Yeh, Win 98 is less prone to virus than XP but so is my old C64. Trouble is they are both completely out of date.
XP is the most popular OS at the moment so it is the one that is the main target for any virus writers, but despite what others are likely to say, it is the most stable OS and the least buggy that Microsoft have ever produced.
Get Norton Internet Security and keep everything up to date and you will be much safer than with Win 98.

nivek, sorry my uncle doesn't drink. ;)
well ya , i know the disadvantages . . .but since it's not up to date, it's not the hackers or viruses main target. won't that be good thing?

i really want to believe that the virus writers are anivirus makers themselves.
you see it's business. they create virus, and anti virus so people will buy their product. i don't mean every single virus that comes out. maybe most of them.
No, they aren't. I myself know a lot of virus writers, just because there a lot of whackos in the Linux community.
Going back to 98 is an even worse idea than using Win XP! Get 2000! More secure, faster, and better ... no gumdrop graphics and crappy interfaces and slower performance with no features in return...

Please no WIN9x, use Win2000pro or WinXPpro (not WinXPhome)
if ya have upgraded Win2000Pro to servicepack 4 ya have the best security there is mate, just like XP if ya upgrade it to servicepack 2 ya have the best security.
The only thing ya need it a firewall and VirusScan
;) cheers m8
BTW... my OS is Win2000Pro sp4 and i don't have any problems

Windows 98 and ME worked OK, but can crash often. I heard ME was one of the worst OS Microsoft made.
I suggest you to get Win XP Pro or Win 2000 Pro but XP takes some resources so you should have a modern puter.
Just stick to XP get Norton Anti Virus and you'll be fine mate

Eh, I think ZoneAlarm can stop porn too... you can tell ZoneAlarm what sites he has to block.
But I'm not sure. As for your OS... I agree with the rest: if you're using Windows, you should use 2000 or XP if you really want to.

thanks for sharing your opinions, i'm back on xp now. i have this little problem with my msn messenger. i'm automatically logged in as soon as i go online. i did not tick the "remember" and "save" boxes at the sign in slots. nor did i put the option for automatic log in. the thing is i can't find the"log in as a different user" in my account. it is only available when i'm not logged in. where do i fix this prob.

i'm back to using win98 now, as my uncle suggested to use it instead of xp or me, says 98 is less prone to bugs and viruses.
what do you think?
is certainly wrong.in both cases (bugs+viruses)...and thats not all. win98 and win95 can only copy with a limited amount of RAM.so if you have sth like 512mb of ram, or even more - its worthless.both systems were designed at a time when pc did not have much ram(sth like 128mb, or 256mb).Only Windows NT was for really professional applications..and could handle 2Gb of RAM. (but of course..at the price of being not plug&play enabled.)
This all changed when Win2k came into play.
Despite some security holes at the beginning, Win2k was *MUCH* better
than NT. Use therefore Win2k(service pack 4) or Windows XP.
Throw away Win98. Also install the latest service packs for the office
applications(IE 6+Outlook).
Install also a firewall!
One very important hint: when you format your PC:
Do it all offline!..because it takes usually even only seconds to be infected,
this means install antivirus and other protection before you go online.
