Do I need to patch games in any way to use the gameshark/knife trick?

probably if your GS2 is version 1.3 or below, mainly setting the system.cnf to LBA 12231

When I used to use my GS2 v1.0 I usually used the Napalm patcher, which I think blindly set the system.cnf to 12231. If that didn't work I would manually use ISObuster and addzer0 to do it. I don't know if this is necessary with a version 2 though.

Plus remember there is a size limit when using this method, must be under 74 minutes.
Have you tried anything yet and failed? A straight backup of a CD game might work, I'm not 100% sure
