Thanks in advance for any future post. Now to the problem, i've been trying to connect a crossover network with not much success. I'm running XP PRO and this is how i've been trying to do it. Well first of all I have two comps one with a NIC & Cable connection the other with just a NIC. So i've typed in the ip, subnet, gateway & both DNS into both my NIC, this info is from my cable connection tcp/ip settings. I then run the network wizard on my comp the host one, and says its got the internet connection etc... then I choose my cable connection as the internet thingy. The next page with all the info says the network will be held through my NIC and that it will connect through my cable connection. When i click next it does it's searching thing and says theres a problem.
Some extra info is that my NIC on the host comp does not seem to want to except the data, ip... when I double click on it it says unidentified for everything, which is not the case on my other pc. If anyone's asking what sort of cable IP etc I have I don't no, just that the guy at my ISP sayed to connect the two NIC staticly. This is all the advice he could give me for the ISP has a policy not to help with networking. The anoying thing is the guys also said it ways and easy process.
The process is proberly easy to someone whos done it before, but not for me this is my first time. And all the info on the net just confuses me more so if anyone no's what the prob is could you please help, I will be forever in your service...
Cheers, ste05
How are the computers connected? As in:
Internet > Comp 1 > Comp 2
or
Internet > Comp 1 > Comp 2 > Internet
etc.
Are you sure both NICs and the cables are working? Are the cables plugged all the way into the NIC (that happens quite often believe it or not.)

i wouldn't say easy to do, but i can do it. just explaining it is hard lol.
nic1=pc with cable
nic2= pc without
First enable internet sharing on nic1 (cable)
nic1 give an ip address (192.168.0.1) subnet (255.255.255.0) put in the DNS of your ISP.
with nic2 give an ip (192.168.0.2) subnet (255.255.255.0) put nic1 ip as the gateway and you can use either nic1 as ur DNS1 or the ISP it don't matter.
hope you can understand that. :d
good luck. i would recommend a router thou. will speed up your surfing and makes life easier.

What you just told me, I did and I doesn't work. A question I had about your previous lot of info is that NIC1 does not have a gateway is this so? Also I think the main part of my prob is setting up just the network filesharing etc... I haven't done that yet. This is how I tried to do it. Get into network connection, click on set up home... then choose my cable connection from this list. This would then come up with the info of the network which seems fine net adaptor for connection and local area network (cable) for internet this all seems fine but it says theres a prob????? Is how i'm setting it up right?
Thanx for the help guys so far.

Also you should make sure that both the pc's in the network are members of the same network group, ie. make sure both computers are part of the "WORKGROUP" network. Win has a habbit of jumping sometimes back and forth with "MSHOME" as the default group.
Second as billie said make sure you got the two nic cards configured manually, this reduces problems that can arise. Thirdly make sure that the default xp firewall is turned off on the internal cards of comp 1 and 2. You should however keep a firewall on you gateway machine (cable) connection.
Also when you are checking the internet firewall on your cable connection, also check the box that says something like "allow other users to share this internet connection" that way you can do it without the wizard.
Finally if you need to troubleshoot then its time to get into the cmd prompt go to comp one (the server) then "START>RUN>CMD>RETURN" to get a dos window.
The following info is based on the understanding that you have made your server pc 192.168.0.1 and your client .02 (if it's diff then you will have to adjust the numbers accordingly) In the window type ping 192.168.0.2 (return). You should get some sort of response saying "reply from 192.168.0.2 blah blah" if you get a "request timed out error" then check your firewall and network settings on your client computer. Do the same for your client computer to your server computer where you should "ping 192.168.0.1" same as above if you get a "request timed out check the ip settings and the firewall settings". If you get a return on the pings between the computers then check your computers workgroup settings again to make sure they are both in the same group.
If you need any more info on getting it going just give us a shout in here and i will see what i can do..
