No you can't use a burnt copy.
Knife trick is basically manually forcing the tray out so you can swap disc without the ps2 knowing.
You take the front of the tray off.Put in the swap magic/gameshark ,when you get to where you need to swap disc ,you push a little white pin under the tray to unlock it ,then pull the tray out ,swap disc and push it back ,then lock it again and press x.
Search on google for knife trick guide and you should find better explaination on it.
Chip is better though.

alright now i have an idea of the knife method now there is a problem i don't have a gameshark 2 or action replay cd or anything like that so are there any methods that doesn't require a gameshark or anything?

First off all what do you want to do with your PS2?
I personally think the best thing as Armadillo said is getting a modchip installed. flip top is actlually crap i've read on many forums their PS2 blew up. Swap Magic is also crap because it doesn't support every game, you have to use to many disks either for DVD or CD games and the latest new games can't be played so always buying the latest updates... About Gameshark or Action Replay i've also read it's not that good for your PS2 coz you can easely break stuff if it's not done the right way. Nowadays the modchips (DMS3, Magic V) can be flash upgradable which means you just download the newest flash that's released on the official sites and just burn it on a CD to upgrade your chip. No need for swapping disks just boot up your PS2 for your backup in the way discribed by which chip you bought and you're offplaying games, even now with the Sony HDD DMS3 is the best modchip available.

i can't solder for crap. last time i tried to solder a modchip in my ps1 it screwed it up and i ended up buyin another ps1. is there any place where i could order a solderless modchip (a real legite one) or send my ps2 to someplace where they could install one for me

ok im not sure if i fully understand this but from the way i read it it seems to me that i can use my Action Replay Max to play burnt backups of games without a mod chip is this correct?
