When I try and install software from disk on XP Pro it always tries to load something from the floppy drive, this happens throughout the install process so you can appreciate its annoying as hell as there is no disk in the drive!
Any suggestions on how this can be overcome apart from removing the floppy drive?
Does it check randomly, or only when it asks for the next disc?

I checks when you access the cd/image drive. Say if i put a disk cd in the drive it will check the floppy also!
Many installs check the floppy drive first when looking for files. If I understand you correctly, I'm not sure if you can turn it off and it's really nothing to worry about.

The only downside of not having a floppy drive is not having a floppy drive.... You can't rescue disks, you can't transfer simple small stuff (why waste an 800MB CD for a 1kb homework assignment?), and you won't have anything to shove small objects into.
