A friend of mine is searching for a programme where you can edit films with (avi, mpegs, etc)
He wants to be able to cut and paste some pieces and so...
anyone knows a good programme for this? Easy to use and if possible free (but it's not really that bad if it ain't free)
Thanks for any help :)

Virtual dub can cut avi's.But to be onest most of the free where programs ive seen only do the basic editing .. cuting, joining, and running filters when encoding. To do some serious editing you need one of the adobe programs.(there may be others, not to sure.)

If you could get a hold of a Mac from someone you could use iMovie. I use that alot and it is very good and easy to use. In the last 2 weeks I have made a 40 documenty out of over 600 hours of footage all done in iMovie. But make sure it is a iMac with more that 800mh/z power and 348mb ram. I don't know if iMovie can open .avi but if you use quicktime pro you can open .avi after downloading DivX.

Bulzy i know i have USED it. Apple have just released the new version of it. It's called Final Cut Pro HD. that looks good and with the rest of the software in the same line you need a G5 dual 2.0 gh/z with 2gig of ram.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/ (http://www.apple.com/http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/) also have a look at the rest of the software
Update I took a few screen shots of the two programs if you want a look
