Do yo u have the latest direct x? What about an update patch for the game? (assuming there is one).
Also are you running the game from an original installation?

I had the same problem, but try downloading the dxwebsetup from Windows (that won't change anything) and then install the DirectX from your BF Vietnam CD!!! Sounds funny but it worked...

Ive got the same problem first i thought it was because i just got a new amd 64 and i wasnt compatable but then i looked on ea support centre and found this > Battlefield Vietnam does not support some of the hardware features of the ATI 9800 range of video cards.
If you experience strange graphical anomalies with this card you will need to alter your display settings.

To do this, first exit Battlefield Vietnam and bring up the display properties by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Properties. Now click on Settings -> Advanced -> 3D. In the 3D settings for Direct3D, make sure the "Use custom settings" box is not checked. If it is, make sure the "Application Preference" checkboxes for anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are turned on.

If you have Anti Aliasing and/or Anisotropic Filtering enabled for your video card, try disabling these features in your ATI/NVIDIA control Panel

I havnt tried it yet, hope this helps.
