Seems like adware & spyware.

However! If you were unlucky do it the hard way :)

run regedit.exe and head to this location ^_^

The registry only may not be enough. You don't just have spyware, I think you have a hijacker as well.
Download Hijackthis, and scan your IE with it, then, kill all dodgy things scanned.

get Lavasoft Ad-aware and do a scan.

If you have XP Pro you could check this setting:

already done a scan with ad aware and spybot ill try what spy sujested.


btw i have change the hompage using the registry thanks

but would still like to know how to remove the greyed out buttons

i have xp home so it dont have htat options brick

HijackThis should be able to remove it, AdAware and SpyBot isn't always enough if you have problems with start page

edit it worked it out
it told me that spybot had a option ticked that locked the buttons so i went and unticked it and works now thanks NV and every 1 else taht helped
