Counter Strike 1.6 Problem

i have a serious problem with cs 1.6
i log in with my steam account but when i go to the options menu and begin to change the default buttons to the one i use the entire computer hangs
from what i have understand there is a problem with my video card ati
radeon 9600 pro and the openGL drivers that it uses beacuse when i change the OpenGL video mode to Direct 3D i can change anything without problems but i play with 60 FPS
any suggestions???

Update GPU drivers?

Reseting your computer and deleting all steam and steam releated files then reinstal the whole thing. This normally works.
