quake 3 arena help

I need help with quake 3. now every time i run it, it gets to the screen when you chose who is going to be in the game and it stops and an :error1: error report screen comes up. quake then closes and the desktop and everything i run afterwards is really bright.

Quake3.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

My PC is an AMD 3000+ xp runs at 1.3Ghz, 512Mb ram, ATi radon 9500, 60Gb hard drive

Is this error occurring when you use your original game disc?

I know this is not regarding your question, but if you don't mind me asking, why is your Athlon XP 3000+ only running at 1.3Ghz? Shouldn't it be running at about 2 GHz?

No I downloaded it off the internet it isnt with a cd.
