OK. I'm going to attempt a recovery of the laser gear/ DVDrom laser in my Playstation2. Unfortunately, when I tried to crack open the case, I couldn't figure out a good way to do this without breaking the plastic.
Could someone please tell me the best way to open the PS2 case without doing lasting damage to it?

Undo the 10 or 8 screws depending on the version ,then just lift the bottom or top off ,if you wanna get to the lens ,then lift the top off ,you have to lift and slide it forward slightly to get around the tray.Don't pull to hard or to far as there is a little ribbon cable connecting the reset and eject button to the mainboard

and for extra safety (if you want to) wear disosable gloves or wash your hands and make sure there dry

First of all, thanks to you both for your help.
:bhead: Second of all, AHHHH! I'm such an eejit. I opened the case, and took a look at both the laser gear and laser assembly, and cleaned them off with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. No prob. However, when I went to re-assemble, the lid slipped in my hand, and the silver ribbon connecting the power controls to the DVDrom came unattached.
By the look of the ribbon, it's not damaged or ripped, it just came out. Can I re-attach it, and if so where? Please tell me I haven't deep-sixed my PS2.
Cheers,
