PS1 without a mod chip?

i have a ps1 (mainly for ff7 "fav game ever") anyway i am wondering if i can back up the games and play them witout a mod chip? If so do i need a boot disc and can i burn a copy of that or do i still need to buy that?

Gameshark 2 comes with a PSX cheat CD as well as PS2 CD, that can be used to swap PSX backups. But you need a method of swapping without using the eject button
