Magic2 PS2 "No Swap" Mod-Chip

I have a playstation 2 scph-30001 r. and i received at around christmas time. i am thinking about putting a magic2 chip in but i read that if you chip you playstation's the laser burns out. do you know if this is true? is it because they use regular cd-r to play their games and not dvd-r's?
