The background:

Basically, nothing so far has fixed it. It happend when I was running via cd-emu, which is what I thought was the problem, it happens now that I have a working b.net cd crash. I've tried disabling the usual culprits like 3D sound, and then sound all together. Tried changing res, detail settings, closing down all external apps, anything and everything I thought of I've tried. Reinstalling etc.

When it occurs: Generally speaking, during a map load.. Which is nasty business, cos it builds a rep as a quitter, when I sure as heck aint doing it on purpose. It usually crashes out during the first 'pause' of the map load, for those who play.. When ya loading the map, you'll note a few steps along the load bar where it pauses a moment or two. At the first one of those, is *usually* when it crashes.

But it can crash at other random times with much less frequency, such as just chatting, sometimes at load time, and occasionally even after a game is successfully loaded and having played in it for a while.

I'm starting to get to my wits end about it, any and all advice would be so very muchly appreciated.

This when it's accessing the CD by any chance?

Tis quite possible. To be honest, I have no clue what is triggering it. Since done some more research into the matter, looked over google, blizzard tech site, etc. Seems the problem itself is rather common, just very little in the way of definitive answers. And it seems *most* people get a 'read' version of the error, as opposed to the 'written' one I am getting.

I saw a few instances of it, but unfortunately the thread that looked like it might be the most useful appeared to be written in german.

we need your pc specs!!
this cant possibly happen on every map load
either the "custom game" youre tryin to play is coded badly,
the pre-razor release of war 3 has many unknown errors from what i heard
1. try uninstalling war 3
2. installing war 3
3. patch it to 1.12(roc not ft)
4. crack if necessary using the proper one

PC Specs:

AMD XP+ 2200 (Running at spec 1.8GHz)
GeForce4 ti4200 128mb ram (not o/c'd)
512 mb RAM - Ran a diagnostic on it, one of those boot to load diags, let it do the extended tests, no problems here, I didn't think so as WC3 is the only thing to have these sorts of probs.
Creative SB Audigy 2

All drivers are up to date, downloaded the latest point release of DX, then d/l'd all updated drivers - and bios for the vid card - and installed those.

Ran through the tech support thing on blizzards site, none of those helped, followed it right the way through.

---

While the suggestions given thus far are appreciated, they're largely unhelpful. :/ I've tried many, many things.

Also, this is not a prerazor release, it is from original cd, I have a backup cd made, that in theory is a 1:1, but I've resorted to installing from orig cd, and even played once or twice to check, and the same errors occur.

As for what maps do it, yes, every map does potentially crash, but it doesn't crash every time. Custom maps are by far and away the most likely to crash, but even standard maps have done so, and often I can get a custom map to load perfectly and play it through where the previous day or attempt it crashed 5 times straight.

Tried disabling AGP Texture acceleration, taking the sound acceleration back a step, tried disabling 3D sound, then sound all together, tried running it in opengl and even software tnl mode, and all times it will crash.

However, it crashes much *less* than it used to, so something I have done has at least helped a little, but not quite gone the whole way. I've totally uninstalled both Alcohol and Daemon tools off my system, and thought maybe the emulation was messing with things, but apparantly not.

It also doesn't matter now whether I play from orig cd, backup cd with emu if I stick it back on, or a crack, it crashes with roughly the same frequency.

Only time it hasn't crashed so far is when I tried it from.. *gasp* A win 98 boot. I have Win2K and Win98 on my system, but my Win98 install is pretty much clean, I hadn't evne put DX on it yet, so installed DX8.1 from the cd there, and it ran perfectly. But that said, Since making all these changes, I can sometimes get it to play for hours before the first crash, and I only tried it for 2-3 hrs under '98.

But ugh.. Getting rather frustrating, must be something else I am missing.

gameburnworld.com is where I got this crack from. Also, just an update, Win98 isn't any better than 2k, in fact, I think tis worse.

I suspect that it might be system overheating now.. Maybe, I would be more confident of that analysis if not for the fact that the changes I've made already have radically changed the frequency of the crashes.

Just curious though, what is the standard accepted running temp for an AMD CPU? I know they run hotter than Intel chips tend to, but nothin more specific than that.

anywhere from 30c -50c seems like a normal amd temperature
judging by your setup, your ideal temp should be around the mid 30's to lower 40's
i would ditch the dual os' and just run win xp!
maybe you should try the no cd crack i have, just shoot me your email.....what have you got to lose?

Heh.. Looks like need to shoot for a new cooling solution then. My system operates at a case temp of ~30* which is fine, but has a CPU temp of 50-70*, with an avg of about 60-62.

Anywho, can give it a shot, if the crack isn't too large, you should be able to send it to naithin_@hotmail.com np, if it is, lemme know and will PM ya with another.
