PS2 Cheats implementation

Please excuse my ignorance but I was looking at some cheats on megagames specifically for Men in Black 2 and I don't get them. The cheat asks me to press right and gives me the button to press after that and here is something that really baked my cookies, "circle". Could anyone please instruct me as to how I go about entering cheats and what does one mean when they say press "right" or "left" and "circle"? I tried entering them last night but the screen didn't flash which means I didn't get them in correctly.
