I am trying to get into web site design and would like some advice on which programs I should be learning.
I know that there are a lot of options so I would like to know which are the best programs and why.

Start with Dreamweaver MX.

Dreamweaver is a powerful tool, and lets you update your sites quickly & eaisly, and it's fairly easy to use.

Since you are new at this, I recommend you start with downloading some templates online, edit them in DWMX to get a feel for it, then go from there.

I personally use Notepad. I hardcode the pages by hand and I am proud of it! :D If ever I need refreshing on how to code something I google it. If I can't find it on google I have FrontPage and figure it out from there. I have actually never used Dreamweaver, but I do hear that it is better than FrontPage.

Well Frontpage is a pretty easy program too.

I never tried Dreamweaver, I guess it's more advanced.

Thanks guys.
I have got Dreamweaver and Web Studio and I will have a look for FrontPage.
Web Studio was recommended to me as being easy to use but I think the results look rather amateurish.
Dreamweaver I have only had since last night but it looks a bit complicated. Still early days so I'll keep at it but I might well be back with some real dumb questions before long.

When I first ran Dreamweaver I had the same impression. It was going from MS Paint to Photoshop. After that I never opened it again. I think that is more because I don't even have it though.

I taught myself using frontpage 98, made simple crappy pages, I did everything from scratch and always had problems.. due to i was a newb.

I learnt how to use it and whisked up sites that had the information, but the visual display was poor, ive recently got a version of photoshop and dreamweaverMX and after a while getting used to it.. again trial and error. I must say its better than frontpage 98(not tried recent version)

Im happy with DWMX tbh...

I first started learning HTML with Hot Dog or something like that. Ever after that I have been pretty much sticking to hard HTML, as opposed to a WYSIWYG.

stick with Dreamweaver. Just play around a bit and see what you can do.

Yes, I would go with dreamweaver too, FrontPage is horrible.
