Looking for some help, insight, or ideas...

Any compressed exe's... drivers, or demos, self extracting files seem to work, once or twice for me, then thier corrupted... stops loading whatever it may be gives a fairly generic error stating the file is curropt, or there was an I/O error...

Any files freshly downloaded, work fine. This seems to happen if thier on the HDD for any amount of time. Yet no real pattern can be found, as it happens for some files and not for others.

I have to hdd's, running win 2k fully updated.

Which program were the SFX archives made with? Winzip, or WinRAR, winACE, Ark? Check that you have enough space on your C: partition, since winzip at least (for one) doesn't ask you which temp dir to extract to and assumes you've got the space on the C: drive.

Also, do a full virus scan, could be a poorly coded virus trying to incorporate itself into any archives it finds.
Might not hurt to do a defrag and chkdisk, an excessively fragged HDD can corrupt files (and obviously a damaged one too).

Been defraged, and through scandisk has been done. Ran all scans in norton system works. I will run chkdsk when I get home.

Not sure of the app used to compress, thier not files Ive compressed. Exsample being catalyst 3.7...

Doesnt APPEAR to a be a virus either, ran full sys scans, from Norton and from an online scan, neither found anything. No odd processes or outa place reg keys...

Should be lots of space too, 85 gigs free. Made sure of virtual mem, and temp files.

*Also I forgot to note, not near as frequently the same error will happen when installing ANYTHING from a cd. Flashing the bios fixes that.

Checked out catalyst 3.7, nevermind about the sfx creator - that was an installshield setup for sure.

Not too sure what to tell you.. try setting the files read-only, that should fix it. If it doesn't, it's almost guaranteed to be some kind of hardware-based issue.

Checked read-only...
its always install shield apps, or self extracting cabs/zips.. cant think of an example off the top of my head.

...unrelated, k-town, kentville?

Nope, Kingston, Ontario... You live in NS by any chance?

Re-download one you knew became corrupted after a day or two. MD5 it. When it becomes corrupted, check the MD5.

^^ Don't know why i'm telling you to do that. All it'll do is tell you it's corrupted, which the program itself already does nicely. Screw it, it's too late/early for me to be typing. See you all in a few hours.

Post-going-to-sleep note: Try making a few copies of the file on your HDD. same folder or not, shouldn't matter.

Maybe screw around with an IDS-type proggy and monitor the files for any access/writing, then blow the offending program to kingdom ++++ing come. You'd have to google for the program yourself though, i'm far too tired.

Good idea, will do, for all of the above.

And I am in NS.

Recently noticed something that might help....
In my aopenconfig app, which displays hardware info, cpu, ram, hdd, etc... One of my harddrives is displayed fully, the other is not at all.

westren digital 40g 8mg cache 7200rpm ata100 <-- displayed fully
Maxtor 80g 8mb cache 7200rpm ata130 <--- Nothing...
