Information about ps2 online:
Sony have expanded their European on-line plans, promising 'always on' Broadband access, music and video downloads, plus key titles such as
TimeSplitters2,Star Wars Galaxies, Hardware and THPS4.
Speaking at the SCEE preview day, development
guru Phil Harrison boldly declared, "One year from now, I won't be working in the videogames businesss, I'lll be in the networked play 'always on' (ie, no dial up) network connection, consistent across all European nations.
Reading between the lines, you'll need Sony's enthernet adapter, a security coded DNA-S start-up disc (provided with the modem)
and a ISP connection to get on line- with the 40Gb Hard Drive (HDD) a valuable extra.
The startup disk will overwrite the PS2 browser menu with the 'PS@' Broadband Magazine'. From here gamers can access network gaming, demo downloads, a jukebox, video on demand, on-line browsing and instant messaging Security will be a via Sony's DNA-S encryption system.
Memory cards may be used as keys to prevent game piracy. Trials are well underway, with a full UK-network rollout due in October or November 2002.
Chris Deering hinted that subscriptions may be available for as little as $15 a month. Getting on-line should be no more difficult than renting SKY digital.
Sony stressed the importance of profitability possibly to encourage third party developers so on-line games like Hardware may carry monthly subscription charges.
Interestingly, Team Camde's arena based shooter will come bundled with a Ethernet adapter/startup disk.
