What you can try is updating all your drivers.
Graphic, mobo etc.

Do a defrag and full disk scan.

Run Norton Systemworks if you have.

You can also boot with XP cd and use the repair console to repair XP.

I've done some service calls for a similar problem, and most often it was because the person had bad RAM.

*EDIT..MS has info about this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q171/0/03.asp&NoWebContent=1

I know the MS page says it's while installing RAM, but I've seen this happen at various times while the system was being used.

Do you have any other RAM you can test out?

You can also do a online RAM memory test.
I know there is such a tool out there but I don't remember the name or url any more :(
Perhaps someone else knows what I'm talking about :)

EDIT: try at www.SimmTester.com
