Yes you should upgrade, unless you don't play old dos games.
Win XP is much more stable.
Win XP have Win 98 compability mode for older games.
You just rightclick on game icon and choose properties.
I have no problems to play new and half new games on my XP.
The only problem I can see is your ram.
You should atleast have 256 or 512 mb ram.
I have 256 mb and it's acting slower than Win 98 sometimes.
And with that I mean when I browse around Windows, not playing games.

Yeah my friend was in a similar postition to you, he has a P4 1.4Ghz, 128mb RAM, 32mb Geforce 2 MX, We had to upgrade because somehow he deleted neighboorhood network from his desktop :P
Anyway, he hasn't had any compatability issues and it runs okay, although it can get slow at times

I had some smaller issues to play some games (like Worms games), but for the rest, I encoutnered no problem.
I prefer Win 2000 tho... it's also stable, and I just don't really like the interface of XP. I noticed that XP does things on my computer that I never asked, just to make it "easier for the user". That's the only reason why I stick to 2000 as long as possible :)
Anyways, the upgradde is certianly worth it... XP is waaay more stable, and 98 is not used much any more.

One thing I don't understand with Win XP.
By default the standard icons is hidden when you install XP
You have to add them manually.

Just remember when you install XP make sure you do it on a fresh install and delete win98 off your HDD first. and run XP on NTFS instead of FAT32 which your 98 in on

It's not hidden, it defaults to the start menu interface, but you can eaisly change that to the "classic" setting.
I think you should definitely upgrade. I'v been running XP Pro since it came out and have not had any probs playing games. IF anything you can use the compatiblity feature to play older games that would not normally run in XP.

Is this the same if I was upgrading from Windows ME?
Is this the same if I was upgrading from Windows ME?
Windows ME = Windows 9x (mostly) so yes, same applies.
Do NOT use ME!!!! its the worst operating system microshyte made.
p.s this is just a fendly warning not help.

Thats why his upgrading, all Windows 9x use Fat32, NTSC is better though.
As for worms games, you can download compatiabilty patches from their website.

I would never ever ever use Windows ME. It's as stable as a bottle of nitroglycerine, so stick to XP or Win 2000
@Fatman: not only talking about worms games, but take for example the map editor for Red Alert 2 doesn't work properly with XP and the editor mùaker doesn't have a fix for it. Just a small example
Fatman, not correct! Fat32 if faster and better for gaming! NTFS if slower but better compression and prefomace for office work. but unless your benchmarking u carnt see the diffrence, and u cannot use format C: etc or C: when booting of a dos disk if its NTFS u will have to use microsofts own recovery console.

i have used the compadibility feature but it doesnt seem to make any difference
well.. all i need to get is more RAM and convert my drives from FAT32 to NTFS? But doesnt that reduce disk space?? ( dont know for sure. just heard it somewhere ). will there be any probs if i dont have NTFS?
Thanks for all the advice ppl. U r so helpful :)
BTW even i would agree that ME sucks! It was the first OS i had and it crashed so many times!! so i changed to 98

thanks, i'm going to upgrade to XP soon or may be wait until Longhorn is released.
Thanks again :hands:
Luke
ntfs saves diskspace with compression enabled.
Longhorn!!! isnt that ament to have the software to prevent any illegal downloads/copyrights im sure it is.
I dont think so Longhorn will be released for the minimum next 2 years

Yeah I have heard of that Dev, although the story I was told was that it was the Petium 5 that couldn't run that sorta stuff. Although I can't see how the processor would change it.

Those are rumors. At least we won't be able to tell for sure just yet.
simple way is to stick to linux. and also when i was reading up about longhorn a few months ago now they said it will be sort of pay as you go u can only use it online.

Like I've said before, Linux is pretty good, but is far from great.
As for your other comment about Longhorn..I've got two friends that work at Microsoft, and I have not even heard about this "pay as you go" stuff. Anyone can eaisly start rumours.
Actualy a friend who is the Computer tech admin at an office over here and he was told about it by someone from hongkong i think dunno now it was a while ago.

And NTFS is more secure. Hmm, "faster for gaming" versus increased security....Tough choice ;)
Linux is a GREAT os while windows is a GREAT piece of CRAP. Get it right Vile! When it comes to power, sheer performance, management of resources, and the community, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING beats linux. Like you can customize X Windows in Linux, dont even TRY altering Windows GUI. Why buy Office XP for 400 dollars when you can get OpenOffice, same damn thing, free. Why get 3gb of ram for a system that will only waste it? Stick with a regular amount and run linux BETTER than a winxp system with 3gb. Linux is more powerful. It has better hard drive management (not needing a defragment program), uses a MUCH less taxing kernel/root system, and is customizable, plus MUCH more secure than any winbloze OS to date. And tell me when I can program my OpenGL stuff without purchasing 800 dollars software (Visual Studio.NET). Give me a break.
If you have a slow computer, you are basically LIMITED to linux because Linux is the only OS that will run stable on ANY SYSTEM. It takes advantage of HIGH END computers and saves resources for LOW END computers. It's perfect.
NTFS is faster, but more so accsesing files faster. Gaming is better on FAT32 since it focuses on one specific file. While NTFS taxes RAM to load numerous things faster. And Ex3 for Linux beats them all because its faster in every single way. Good day Windows users.

@Dev. as for FAT32 being faster, that's not true for later hardware..For newer hardware, NTFS is faster. The only major thing that FAT32 has is that it's easier to work with because you can access it with a single boot disk, and there are more recovery tools for it. NTFS has tons of bonus' including the fact that it allows for more effiecent (smaller) cluster sizes on bigger hard drives. The only drawback NTFS has is that it can only be accessed by NT. (win 2K, XP, etc)
@Aman:
Like I said above, Linux is nothing special. I like it for programming & networking, but it sucks as a regular desktop OS. The cliched argument about it being more stable USED to work in the Windows 9x days, but that's about it.
u can say Linux is powerful.. and i do agree. it is powerful for programming and netwroking. but it is difficult to use. very difficult for those who dont know programming and deep stuff like that. ppl who use comps to just play games and use it for office prog like word, excel, database etc dont need such a complicated OS like Linux. it is better to have Win. bcoz i am one such person. i used linux and i dont know much programming stuff and i found it difficult to use it.
well that is my opinion

how do i exactly make a fresh install..
1) should i format C: and then insert the CD and then boot from the and install..
2) i have alaso heard that winXP itself offers a fresh install ( which will make it install without deleting 98 ) and upgrade ( which upgrades 98 to xp )
which were u mentioning??

1. Change your boot sequence to boot from CD first.
2. Put in your XP CD, restart your computer and boot from CD.
3. This will start the Windows setup, and from here, you are able to choose what type of install to do. (i.e. choose a drive/parition, and the file system to format with)
