ok, so i used the problems from my old system to push myself into upgrading a little. i decided ton replace the motherboard, the processor and the harddrive. as soon as all of the parts and plugs were in place i decided to start it up and to my suprise (well, not really, i kinda expected it) it did not start up. well all of the fans and lights turn on but the monitor just sits in an idle state. i double check the connections on everything and they checked out.
the only thing i think may be the problem is the ram possibly. with one stick of ram in there (and ram being one of the few things that still confuse me when building a computer) would a computer act like this when turned on and the ram isnt compat. with the motherboard? or could it be something else?
i hope i can end all of this soon being i havnt had a working computer in two weeks and my roommates are getting a little annoyed with me using theirs all the time :)
Did you hear any beeps when you turned on the computer?
From my experience, you'll get other errors (maybe during POST) if it's RAM.
You said you double checked everything..Does that include the video card? Do you have another video card you could test it out with?

no beeps. so i was thinking that the ram wasnt the issue. but its was the only thing like i said that i really dont have much experiance with.
as for the vid card, i do have access to another, but not until morning. so that was going to be my next test.

Ok, give the video card a shot, because you should be able to see something assuming your video card & monitor are good.

no beeps means the mobo isn't even posting. Make sure it isn't shorting out by setting it up outside of the case on something non-metal. Also make sure it is correctley hooked up the the power switch.

This happened to me a while back, no beeps, no POST, no nothing, In the end it was a sensor; it wasn't toching the CPU and needed to be seated properly, but this was on an Abit NF7-S mobo.

ok. i put a geforce 2 into the system this morning and got a picture.
BIOS check sum error
Checking Floppy drive (or something to that effect)
PRESS ENTER
now, im just going to go out on a limb here, but being a new MB i am assuming i would have to load bios to it from as it says a disk. this is assuming i was suposed to receive a disk. i checked the manual for package contents and it mentions:
Fully Setup Driver CD X 1
Flash Memory Writter for BIOS update X 1
i have the cd, but no clue what the Flash mem. thing would be. is that what its asking for on startup?
on a side note, the gfx card i had in there was a radeon 9700. is it possible that the card wont work because the bios are not fully configed yet and that it will work once this BIOS check sum is taken care of?
thnaks for the help so far. looks like this may be over soon.

try resetting you cmos with the jumper, that should do the trick.
Yes, reset the CMOS - usually by taking the jumper off the cmos reset pins of pins one and two and putting it on two and three - hold it for 10 seconds and put it back. Checksum errors usually occur after changing something in the bios that the machine doesn't like. I wouldn't be surprised if other errors occured.
Also, mind telling us what motherboard you are using now?

sorry, its a biostar m7vit pro board.
ok. i set the jumper in the 2&3 slot (while the computer was off i assume was the correct way.) waited ten seconds and set it back to the way it was on 1&2. getting the same error. here is what it says exactly, there was one word i left out.
BIOS Rom checksum error
Detecting floppy Drive A media
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
thats it word for word. any ideas? im going to try their tech support but i dont think they will be there on a weekend.

From my experience, I would definetly check if it's grounded or something. Usually when it's grounded, there's no beep. Try taking out all of the PCI cards you have except for the video card and see if it boots. If it doesn't boot, take out your mobo and reinstall it. But do it carefully this time. Hope this will help you and good luck.

no if he is getting it to post I would think it isn't a grounding problem.
Read the manual on how to reset the cmos, you may have to take out the battery also. Also try to get in to the bios by pressing del key and see if you can set it up from in there.

unfortunatly i cant get into anything, it just starts up at that message. as for the resetting, the manual says exactly the same thing as what was said here, switch the jumper to 2&3 then switch back. i am going to give the tech support a call tomorrow durring their hours and see whats up.
Did you install a operating system Windows/Linux? lol
I'm betting thats your problem at this point.

Have you tried putting a 98 or other type of boot disk in floppy A because its telling you that it is looking for it.
Detecting floppy Drive A media
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
Have you tried going into the bios and setting it up while most moboes nowdays auto detect most components not all do and that will probably be the check sumerror.
Its also here that you will also have to change to boot to cd rom if you want to load xp
