Right i got two pc's ,the main one and a 600mhz one.Call them pc1 and 2 for now.

First the network problem ,they seem to be together correctly as pc2 is sharing the internet connection that pc1 has and also has access to a folder that is on pc1.Now the problem ,according to windows when the pc's are networked you should be able to right click on a folder and there should be a share tab ,where you can set the folder to be shared on the network. Now on pc1 this tab is present ,but on pc2 it is not,so none of the folders on pc2 can be shared with pc1 as the share tab is not on pc2 for some reason. So i think something is wrong.

Now the red alert 2 problem ,when i click network on pc1 to start a game it go's to the network match setup screen fine, but on pc it can't when you click network.it just takes you straight back to main menu. Now i think this may have something to do with problem one ,as if i go options network on ra2 on pc2 where it says network card ,it says ipx not available ,but if i go options network on pc1 on ra2 ,it says network card then aload of numbers which i assume is the address.

So red alert 2 don't seem to see the network card on pc2 which is why it wont let me get to the network screen and it would appear windows don't know its there or something aint configure right as there is no share tab on pc2 which there should be when on the network. Yet im connected to pc1 as a folder on there is shared and i can see it and i share the connection that pc 1 has.

Also the network card shows up in device manager and windows says its functioning correctly. So why can't files on pc2 be shared and why can't ra2 see the card on pc 2?.

PC1 is winxp
PC2 is win98

The network cards are both the same model.

I've had this before with Win98.

Have you installed Microsoft Networking Client?

I'm sure it's actually Microsoft Client for Windows or something. It allows you to share files and folders. It is under the network properties. Install it, and configure it.

That should cure your networking prob.

Thats installed on the 98 pc and so is ipx/spx which is suppose to let two different os see each other. Also i just tried now and when i add the ipx/spx then shut the network properties and reopen the ipx/spx is not there no more. Also when i tick in network properties ,share my files and folders ,then press ok ,when i leave then come back to properties its unticked itself?

Welcome to Windoze 98.

Now, this may sound extreme, but remove all your networking components and reboot the machine.

Re-install it all. Install TCP/IP on both machines. Set the IP on PC1 to:

192.168.0.1

and the IP on PC2 to:

192.168.0.2

The subnet should be 255.255.255.0 on both machines.

Make sure they exist in the same network group. Call it something simple like HOME. M$ default it to MSHOME.

Once you've done that, report back in with how it went. If you need more help or explanation for why I've asked you to do this, don't hesitate to ask.

I remember when my PC1 and PC2 were connected via a network, and we tried to play Red Alert 2. For some reason, in the lobby of a lan room, I could see him, but he could not see me and vice versa. I would see what I typed, but he couldn't and vice versa. We could not see eachothers hosted games, and in the end we just gave up.
Arckane has got u covered I reckon. But then i wouldn't know as im runnin XP pro. Of my networking days, i can only remember troublesome times *sigh* good luck though mate ;)

Right got the ipx/spx and some print and filesharing installed. Now i can right click the files on the 98 pc (PC2) and see the share tab and click share folder. Now Ra2 see the network card aswell and lets me start a network game.

Now it aint fixed totally, after i share a file on pc2 ,pc1 can't see it in my network places. Also if pc2 host's the lan game pc 1 cant see it ,but if pc 1 is hosting pc 2 can see it ,join and play.So i can play as long as pc1 is hosting.

So i think the prob with ra2 and pc2 hosting might be related to the prob of pc2 sharing and pc1 not seeing it ,any idea's

Stupid win98 just don't seem to want to cooperate :(.
