Win XP in FAT 32... better is to convert it to NTFS, otherwise I'm afraid you will have some compatibility problems with many things (altho, I know it is like that for Win 2000, so it is probably also the case for XP)

I don't know however if it is possible to convert to NTFS without formatting the HDD

Yes, I recommend to use NTFS on Win XP.

How to convert from FAT to NTFS (no format needed) - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314097

Remember, you can't convert back without formatting.
