I followed the instructions here:
http://www.megagames.com/news/html/demos/doomiiileakeddemo!.shtml
and they did work when I was using Win98SE. I just upgraded to XP Professional and now the game does not work. The OS upgrade is the only change I have made to my computer.
When I go into the game, the console loads as it should, and then the window for the game pops up. But, instead of showing the game menu, it shows a gray screen. I can still load up the levels through the console since I already know how, but all I can see is a gray screen. I have the newest drivers for my video card straight from nVidia's site and I just got DirectX 9 off Microsoft's site to see if that would change anything, but it did not. In addition, all other drivers are the latest from the manufacturer's sites (sound card, mainboard, etc). Here is my system setup just for reference:

AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.3GHz
MSI K7T266Pro mainboard (AGP fast writes enabled)
Visiontek GeForce 2 MX400
640MB PC2100DDR
Hercules MuseXL surround sound
Maxtor 40GB hard drive

An additional note, my friend who is running a brand new setup with WinXP Home has no trouble running the game, but I know someone else who also cannot run the Doom 3 demo on WinXP Professional. This leads me to believe that it is something with trying to run OpenGL in a window mode in WinXP Professional that is stopping me from playing the game. Any suggestions on what to do are more than appreciated, as I am going through withdrawal from not playing this game!

Download the latest drivers of your Graphic Card. You can get them from the card manyfacturer's homepage.
I had to download the specially created Win 2000 and Win XP drivers in order to make some games work with my GeForce 2 and Win 2000, so it might help you out.

Thanks for the advice. I am downloading the only drivers listed on Visiontek's site. Unfortunately, I don't know if they will work since they are version 30.82 and I already have version 44.03 from nVidia's site. It doesn't seem that Visiontek has kept their drivers up to date for their old cards.

Just as some side info, I plan to get a Hercules Prophet 9700 Pro as soon as they come down in price a little (or as soon as I get tired of waiting for that to happen). Do you think that will remedy my problem; switching from an nVidia card to an ATI?

Dude, you are awesome. I didn't think that would work since Visiontek only had version 30.82 of the drivers and I already had version 44.03, but I did the install and did not let it overwrite the newer files, only update with ones that weren't there. Well, it works now, and it runs way faster than before. Thanks alot.

Ok, so now I'm getting the same problem as you had, the grey screen. I start up Doom 3 and get the grey screen and it just stops there, I can't bring down the console or anything, and its in windowed mode.
When I first tried running the game I didn' even get that far, but I went and downloaded nvidia's latest Detonator drivers (44.03 I think) and after that it brought me to grey screen. :D
Any help? What was that link for the Visiontek drivers? Seems that, I'm having the exact same problems as you BFG10k but I don't know the site for those Visiontek drivers.
Linkage would be appreciated.
Nvm. Update: At Nvidia's website for the drivers they also have an archive you can go to to get the 30.82 drivers. Install the 30.82 and it will work for you if you are having any of these problems, I just got mine working also.
Thanks for the help.
Here is link for drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
or here for 30.82: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_archive

You only downloaded the detonator drivers from Nvidia? If you are running Win 2000 or Win XP, that is not enough... many grpahical issues with these two operating systems and Nvidia cards can be solved by installing the drivers especially designed for XP and 2000 :)
If you have an nvidia, grab them here (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_44.03)

EDIT: My mistake, didn't see your update in your last post...

Hey there.
I know BFG10K from another forum, and he told me about this forum... and i have almost the same troubles as he did... my screen turn grey and starts to flicker. Heres my system:
Intel P4 2.4 ghz
soltek sl85erv2 mainboard
512mb ddr2100 ram
geforce4 ti4800
soundblaster live! soundcard
OS: Win2k pro

I've tried it both on win xp pro and win2k pro.. none works.. i've changed my drivers from manufacturer drivers, to nvidia drivers.. old and new versions... but nothing works... anyone has any idea of how i might get it to work, as this is driving me insane

To both of you, how big was the rar you downloaded. There were a few releases out there, and some were bad. The archive I released (working one) was approx. 314 MB (rar file)

Do you guys have any trouble with any GL games, or do they run fine?
Did you follow all the instructions I posted here? :
