tried ntcompatible.com and the compatibility tool but no luck. Anybody know a solution?

You have two options:
Or there is a patch somewhere that enables you to play the game on win 2000 (but I don't know where)
Or there is no patch, and then I'm afraid there is nothing you can do.
For the patch, take a look at the website of the makers of the game, they might have it.
