Creating your own forum the easy way.
In 5 mins you can have a forum that looks like this:
http://pub117.ezboard.com/bsupercomputers
(don't register with this forum - its just a tester I created)
Ive had a couple of people ask me how they can create their own forum, and I decided that the easiest way is to get a board with this website:
http://www.ezboard.com/
You can customize everything, and its so incredibly easy. You don't need advanced knowledge in anything.
Give it a try if you want your own forum. :)

First of all, the forum doesnt look good and is seriously poor.
But EVERY1 know has a forum. I created my forum before EVERY1 does and know little forums with people who dont know how to run them make their own. its pub117 because the names have been taken 117 times! :S
I posted this because people with little experience or knowledge are entitled, if they wish, to run their own forum.
Technology should not be limited to only those that can fully understand every technical detail. Just as wysiwig html programs were invented to allow people who were not advanced in code writing to produce a website of their own.
I posted it for reasons of equal opportunity.

Kaneda, if you want to criticize, please do it tactfully.
Both of you need to quit taking things so personally, and quit attacking each other.

Forums are getting more and more pouplar, and believe it or not, there are many people who don't have as much experience as you and I. Everyone needs to start somewhere, regardless if it's Ikonboard, phpBB, Invision, Burning Board, UBB, vBulletin, etc. James was merely trying to help people get a start. Same thing goes when people post links to site builders, or recommend people use MS Front Page for web pages. IMO FP is a horrible program, and can't get anything, but it's easy to use, and it's good for people that have little experience, and would like to learn. It's the same type of stuff.
Please, try to get along with each other, if you cannot do that, then don't even bother replying to each others posts, but there is no need for such hostility.
@vile - yes things have been getting iffy between Jamez and I, probally more my fault, i admit that.
But i hate this with passion .. along with "every web kiddie owning their own design company".
I appoligize if you were offended Jamez/Anoyone Else, i think im taking out my forum quietness on everyone.
Feeling crappy about it, ran it for a year almost now (i know not much) but i KNOW im a good admin, and i KNOW where i mucked up but cannot rectify it and it'll only be rectified in time.

Personally I'd preffer to be able to view the forum without having to register and having something on your home page to give an idea of what topics are available might help.
I'll have a look later.

Personally I hate EZ Board, I think it's nasty looking, and I can probably code a better software than that from scratch, so I agree with you, but like I said, people must start somewhere.

i prefer the togrc free boards (as per GKF) but as with my rule of thumb... you always get what you pay for

GKF is cool, but Togrc is...well..how can I say it in a nice way...Hmm, there really isn't a nice way to say it, so I'll leave it at that... ;)

Im pretty sure its actually illegal, i was looking at it the other day, and well, its illegal for more than 1 board to be on a single vB liscense.... so surely that makes it illegal.
Wudnt touch TOGRC although atleast you'll get experience with vBulletin.

obviously these free BB hosts must have license aggreements to stay in biz.
@Vile... know what your saying m8 ;) but as i said... you get what you pay for... and i guess it depends on how hard you work at it

With the EZ board, you can choose who you let view the forum.. 'anyone' 'registered users' or 'admins and mods'.
I appoligize if you were offended Jamez
The forums shold be a place for fun, and that is the most important thing. If people didn't enjoy using forums they would be empty. Lets hope that everyone can get on better :) ..and start having some F U N!! :D

Actually I also thought it was illegal, but apparently it's not.
There was a discussion about this at the vB forums, and a number of people reported the site, but they said it is legal somehow.

What about the Tag Boards? Are they any good?

I really hope TOGRC isn't illegal, I can always ask the webmaster which I have spoken to some times on msn
if it is, then we probably get our own server faster :p
I can also recommend http://www.myikonboard.com/
they give free host and it's easy to setup

TOGRC is a cut down version of vbulletin, sort of a vbulletin lite, they most probably have a special license but I would look into it if I was you molle.
Ezboard brings back memories, happy days :D

its better having these sort of freebie places rather than ppl trying to use free host sites and upload forums, etc that run like an old dinosaur (aka bb on tripod (i think it is))

Yeah, I also thought the same thing when I first saw it.
They actually are using vBulletin (regular, since vBulletin Lite is no longer available)
They just tried to be clever, and use one instance of vBulletin.
Probably just have multiple tables within the same database, but it is not illegal.
I dunno, regarding stuff like that..It's cool and all, but template hacks will only get you so far. If you can't access the database, and alter it, (even backup db for obvious reasons) then the user is quite limited.

This does not help the situation any.
 and so it begins *u trying 2 start trouble @ Troop??*

Actually I am looking at some of these free places so I can learn how to edit the boards and stuff so eventually I acan offer help to other places, eg like make a style for MGF to use with all the hacks involved.
While I would love to be able to afford a copy of VBulletin, it just aint possible so I would have to rely on these free places to practice.
togrc imo is really good... especially when it was free awhile back but now they charge :o *sigh*
i mean.... it gives us first hand of how it feels to run a board like mgf... u kinda get the feel of what/how the admins put up a great forum like this:)
and for the price.. what do u expect? the only thing bad about it is the server is sometimes unstable but it has gotten better... and that we cant add hacks ourselves which is y togrc isnt illegal.... but the good part is we can tell moonlight what hacks we want and he'll add it for us (doing our the dirty work:D) so really it isnt that bad...
but if u want to start somewhere cheap... ill recommend invision board rather than ezboards....
http://www.invisionboard.com ;)

Invisionboard and a lycos server works okay
I helped a guy set one up
http://members.lycos.co.uk/blitzace/forums
free and 100% legal
even if it's best to have a paid server
free servers tend to be deleted :(
